The Problem

Chess players generate huge amounts of game data, but most of it goes unreviewed. Existing analysis tools focus on engine evaluations, cold, numerical assessments that tell you which move was best but not why your decision-making went wrong or what patterns keep recurring in your play. Players who want to genuinely improve need coaching-style feedback, not just centipawn scores.

What I Built

Chessfolio, available at chessfolio.io, is a platform that stores your chess games and provides AI-powered performance analysis. Upload or import your games, and the engine reviews them, not just identifying blunders, but analysing your decision-making patterns, recurring weaknesses, and areas where your play is strongest.

The platform compares your performance against other players, highlighting where you stand in specific areas like endgame technique, tactical accuracy, and opening preparation. It tracks your progress over time, so you can see whether the patterns you're working on are actually improving.

How It Works

Games are stored in a PostgreSQL database with full move-by-move data. When you request a review, the chess engine analyses the game in context, considering your rating level, your historical patterns, and the specific challenges of the position. The feedback is written in natural language, like having a coach walk through your game with you.

The front end is built with Next.js and TypeScript, providing a responsive interface for browsing your game library, reading reviews, and tracking your performance metrics over time.

Reviews actually happen via API meaning any frontend platform can plug into the analysis without having to rebuild the trickiest parts of the app.

Impact

Players get actionable, human-readable feedback on their games instead of raw engine output. The platform turns game data into genuine learning opportunities, helping players understand not just what went wrong, but what to work on next.
